A blogger's tale

A while ago I was asked,
Why and when did you decide to start writing?
Furthermore - what persuaded you to take your talents to the Internet?

Here is what I wrote in reply.
In 2007 I was working in a pressurised environment for the NHS in the UK. My job held plenty of responsibility and hassle, for few rewards. Feeling that I was approaching breaking point I decided that it was time to walk away. As it has turned out I did return in a few short months but in a part-time capacity and different hospital environment.

When I first left though I took a drop in money. My new, temporary job was only just above the minimum wage and the 16 hours reduction in the working week added to the financial restraints.

Still I was much happier and the break gave me time to re-evaluate life and my priorities.

So, at home, with more time on my hands, and no money, I began to research ways that I could make a little extra money on-line.

Simply google "making money online" and all sorts of opportunities and scams are easy to find.

I wanted something that was legitimate, non pressurised and offered a little pocket money.

I began with surveys and mystery shopping and found the rewards nice. They were not always vast but they were steady extra cash.

English had been one of my best subjects at school and writing seemed a possibility. I had been good at art but my poor eyesight limited these opportunities.

I signed up at Dooyoo.co.uk and Ciao.co.uk and began to write product reviews. My initial reviews were dire. Whether it was lack of experience, my health at the time or simply lack of practice I do not know, but some reviews were dreadful. Still I earned a little money and built up a community. All in all I enjoyed these sites. Epinions was another that I joined, but only for a short time.

As my writing improved I gradually abandoned these sites and moved on. For a while I did go back and amend some of the reviews but as the rewards were small it felt time to move on.

I guess Helium was my first proper Internet writing site. It was in its infancy when I joined. Over the five plus years that I have been a member Helium has morphed into a new entity. Some of this I like. Some I do not.

Then in time I came across Hubpages. That site for me fulfilled many of my creative needs at least it did back then. It was user friendly, easy to get to grips with and did not make too many changes, too often. Yes, it has made some but most have been welcome improvements. Infobarrel was recommended by a fellow Hubber other sites followed. In time I streamline my Internet writing. There are only so many hours in a day and I do not want to be a, Jack of all trades, master of none, as the saying goes.

I guess on the whole I would say that I decided to try writing as a means to earn some extra money, but it turned out to offer so much more. Writing online offers flexibility, instant writing rather than jotting down notes and needs little initial financial outlay except for needing to have a computer.

It has helped me keep track of new technological innovations, make many virtual friends and stretch my brain. As practise makes perfect it has greatly improved my writing skills. At least I hope it has. It has become a big part of my daily life. I use it as a means to unwind from my daily part-time work.

As I am approaching retirement I have seen and experienced so much over the years that in some ways I have a wealth of knowledge. That is true of all of us as we go through life. The Internet enables us to share our knowledge and experience with people around the world.

The Internet was the place I chose to write mainly because it is accessible, relatively free, non restrictive and World wide. I also liked the possibilty to remain anonymous when required or wanted. I have no delusions about being another Jane Austen or J K Rowling but enjoy putting my thoughts into words.

Now with two websites under my belt I have gone from blogger to webmaster. Who would have though it? Certainly not I.

If you think that it is easy to make a bundle of cash writing online you are mistaken. It could however be the hobby for you.

Pre-match and match report
Wembley, London, 17.15pm Saturday May 5, 2012

The new Wembley Stadium, opened in 2007 has only played host to the FA Cup three times. Today it will host the final of this competition for the fourth time.

Chelsea and Liverpool are two English teams that up to a few weeks ago would not have been expected to be in this final. As the UK football season draws to a close both of these teams have had a positive surge. This means that it could be either teams day for FA Cup success.

Chelsea
Cech, Bosingwa, Ivanovic, John Terry, Cole, Lampard, Mikel, Ramires, Mata, Kalou, Drogba

Liverpool
Reina; Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Jose Enrique; Spearing, Henderson; Downing, Gerrard, Bellamy; Suarez

The Match
Singing, Mary Jess performed Abide with me, introductions to officials, God Save the Queen sung by a young Soprano, team hand shakes and we were off. A clear, dry but cold evening following so much rain meant the pitch looked in prime condition.

First Half
Chelsea set the game going and were the first to push forward. Drogba went for an early spectacular goal for Chelsea which may have been off the mark but showed that Chelsea meant business. First blood came to Chelsea in the first 11 minutes and was scored by Ramires.

Finally Liverpool were spurred into action. Gerrard took the lead but could not get through the Chelsea defence. 12 minutes in and Liverpool looked in danger again. The pace had heated up but Liverpool quickly took hold  Fire power in the Chelsea goal meant that Liverpool almost scored via Johnson and Bellamy.

15 minutes and almost another Ramires goal for Chelsea. Liverpool goalkeeper Reina all but lost his grip on the ball. Liverpool are having to defend hard to prevent Ramires from scoring over and over again. The 1-0 lead to Chelsea has at least put some fire into the game.

As Chelsea try to get another goal in the back of the net once more, a sea of red shirts fill the area. Liverpool are making their presence felt at both ends of the pitch. Although they are working hard Chelsea still have the edge.

Henderson stops a possible Chelsea goal and Gerrard soon helps shift the play down the pitch. The pace is fast and hard. For Chelsea it will be a good tester pre their next champion match, against Bayern Munich. Lampard made a half hearted long attempt at a goal which was neither use nor ornament.

Gerrard and Suarez can be a winning combination but as yet they have failed to gel in a productive manner. 30 minutes in though and Liverpool are gaining some ground. Ramires and Enquire clash resulting in a free kick for Chelsea. Not in the goal circle but close enough. The ball was soon put out of harm's way.

A flurry of action started by Ashley Cole looks good but each Chelsea player is stopped by Liverpool. Cole slips more than once at a crucial stage of play. A long goal attempt by Gerard was never going to be useful. Gerrard takes a knock which gets Mikel a yellow card. A free kick from almost the centre of the pitch from Gerrard. Easily moved away by Drogba.

Drogba takes an ambitious shot which bypasses the net. Downing sets up a possibility which is just cleared away by Chelsea. 5 Minutes left of the first half and the pressure is one. Liverpool fight hard to score. Suarez header just fails to connect. Chelsea continue to fight hard to stay in the lead.

Agger argues over a booking for a team player and ends up with a yellow card himself. The referee appears determined to keep the players in line. A little extra time in the first half but the score remains 1-0 to Chelsea.

Second Half

An early corner from Bellamy for Liverpool was wasted. A sea of Red or Blue is now strategically behind each team's goal and could lift the players spirits or cause the opposition's blood to run cold. Liverpool fans are still waiting for something to cheer about. They decide to burst into song anyway and Gerrard responds. A call for a penalty passes.

Agger spectacularly heads away a potential goal threat by Mata. Drogba within seconds though makes it 2-0 to Chelsea. Chelsea pile on the pressure and just as Liverpool look down and out Suarez sets up a shot. It is soon away and once again the action is in the Liverpool goal.

Spearing goes off and Andy Carroll takes over. For Ramires it is business as usual as he heads for the Liverpool goal. The crowd sing their lngs out in a vain attempt to spur on the players. The commentators busily discuss Drogba and seem to believe that today could be one of his last games. Right now though he is on fire and looking pleased as punch.

Drogba gets caught by Suarez and a free kick follows. Could it be goal number three ? Nope, not this time. Around 28 minutes to go and Liverpool have a lot to do. It is still possible but they do not look as if they have the heart and soul to win.

Drogba attacks the Liverpool goal again but finally Andy Carroll gets one in the back of the net for Liverpool. Now we see a different Liverpool playing hard and full of confidence. Liverpool pile on the pressure in the Liverpool goal. The pace is now at breaking point as both sides give all that they have got. Suarez has a chance but loses it.

The stadium will be full of atmosphere now as the crowd belt out familiar songs. Gerrard should have had a good shot but he blew it. Well over the net. Liverpool's fortunes though seem to have improved greatly since Carroll came on as substitute.

Torres is warming up on the sidelines. Chelsea do look as if they need fresh blood. Suarez strikes but it is just put away by the Chelsea goalkeeper. Have Chelsea played themselves out whilst Liverpool are just firing up? A dangerous header at goal from Carroll but Chelsea escape once more.

Ramires substituted by Meireles for Chelsea. Drogba appears to have a groin injury and is down. Drogba limps of the pitch with the trainer. Liverpool substitute Kuyt for Bellamy. Drogba appears to have made a miraculous recovery and is back in the think of it.

Ten minutes of ordinary time left and the score remains 2-1 to Chelsea.

Suarez sets up Carroll but was it a goal? The referee checks with the linesman. No goal is the decision. It may have slightly passed over the line but it has to be all of the ball over the line to count. The clock is ticking down and tempers are beginning to fray.

Less than 5 minutes left and a corner for Liverpool. Ivanovich for Liverpool soon gets it away. A free kick for Liverpool taken by Gerrard who after all the posturing fluffed it. Another corner.Chelsea's determination gets the ball away. Another corner in the Chelsea end again though. Almost full-time barring any extra or injury time.

Yet another corner but Chelsea will not Liverpool through.Seconds left and 5 minutes of extra time sees Mata replaced by Malouda. Carroll, Downing, Gerrard and Enrique pile on the Liverpool pressure but fail to score. Drogba is brought down by Gerrard wasting some precious minutes. Lampard takes the free kick. Less than two minutes left and Chelsea still look dangerous.

Time is called and the result stays at Liverpool 1, Chelsea 2
Congratulations to Chelsea.

Chelsea's Mata is man of the match.
