The current UK Coalition Government chops and changes its policies, like no bodies business. Unlike Tory Premier Margaret Thatcher, who was famously "not for turning", Cameron and his Ministers seem incapable of sticking to policies. The latest about face, today May 10, 2012, is by defence secretary Philip Hammond.

He will announce to Parliament that the choice of fighter aircraft, for the Royal Navy's new aircraft carriers, is to be amended. The reason for this decision? Why cost, of course.

Hammond has decided that the original aircraft, proposed by the Blair government will be the best option. In the past Hammond said that the earlier choice of F-35B jump jets was not a good one. Those aircraft were widely held to be less effective. However once the cost of a change to F-35C joint strike fighters was realised the Defence Secretary decided to go for the cheaper option. Shame it will not be as good.

The F-35B will not be  inter-operable with the US and French navies. Added to this it is classed as "less capable". Still at least it will cost less!
