The issue of Capital Punishment has raised its ugly head again in the UK. Few people find the death penalty an easy option. It may have some pros but it has many cons. Today, Sunday July 15, 2012, Tory MP Philip Davies appeared on BBC TV explaining why he is in favour of the restoration of the death penalty.If there is one person who is unlikely to persuade this blogger, it is Davies. In the past this reactionary MP has extolled the virtues of disabled people working for less than the minimum wage.
In June 2011 the Guardian carried a report on a proposal by Mr Davies. It seems that he could see nothing wrong with a disabled people working for less than the minimum wage. Davies may not have been proposing any sort of complusion but he could see nothing wrong with a disabled person offering to work for a reduced wage. His argument seemed to be that if a disabled and abled bodied person both applied for the same job the able bodied person would obviously be selected. The only leverage he seemed to think was available for the disabled person was to undercut his or her rival. That is to offer to work for less.
There is so much wrong with his idea.. It assumes the disabled person is not worth employing. It promotes jobs going to the lowest paid employee and more. Think about it and it is not easy to see what is wrong with his loony idea. bAt the time he accused those who objected to his view as having "leftwing hysteria"
If you think you have seen Mr Davies in the news elsewhere this week you would be right. A couple of days ago he was blasted as one of four MPS who had accepted Corporate tickets to one of the most over subscribed events in the London 2012 Olympics. He began toady's interview by answering questions on that score. He said he sees nothing wrong with accepting the tickets having been part of the committee overseeing the Olympics. Most people in the UK may disagree.
Today as he argued the case for the restoration of the death penalty in the UK, the MP for Shipley used Florida as an example. There was a film of a visit he made to Florida where he sat in the electric chair, as he pondered the issue.
He appeared to marvel at Florida, its strict laws and unforgiving death penalty. Is he nuts, this blogger thought?
Currently in Florida there is the unresolved case of George Zimmerman killing an unarmed young black man. After shooting Trayvon Martin to death George Zimmerman has yet to stand trial. So much for tough justice in Florida. Florida's stand your ground law almost encourages citizens to defend themselves in a heavy handed manner. If there had not been a public outcry Zimmerman would not even be facing trial.
You have to ask if Florida law is so just and so tough why it has not impacted positively on the number of murders.Dig a little online and you will find plenty of negative issues regarding Florida and its death penalty. Racism and injustice appear to be rife.
So why is Davies extolling its virtues? Another Tory voicing ill thought out opinions, and jumping on bandwagons, it seems.
