The search for a four-year-old biy who tragically entered the water off the Somerset coast yesterday is now a recovery operation. When the boy, named as Dylan Cecil, entered the water his parents followed suit in a bid to save him. Their frantic attempts to rescue young Dylan were to no avail. The exhausted parents have kept a vigil at the quayside as emergency services launched a search and rescue operation. Today, August 20 the operation has been scaled back and is now a recovery operation.
This means that sadly there is now no hope of finding Dylan alive, barring a miracle.
What happened will come out in due course. So far it has been revealed that Dylan, two siblings and his parents were on a jetty of a costal resort. Dylan's curiosity got the better of him and he toppled into the water after leaning over a little too much. He went underwater and did not resurface. His parents, Rachel McCollum and Darren Cecil, hastily jumped into the water but could not locate the little lad.
In the end the parents were pulled out of the water for medical treatment as the emergeny service operation went into full swing.
The area has treacherous mud flats. When the tide is low it is hoped that Dylan's body may be recovered.
The search continued through Sunday night, albeit with less resources being used. Initially four lifeboats, five coastguard rescue teams, police and a RAF helicopter joined the search for Dylan. It was scaled back when the boy had been missing for more than 16 hours.
A very sad story indeed. Thoughts are with the family at such a devastating time. RIP Dylan.
Update - Today August 23, 2012, a body has been found which is believed to be that of Dylan. The body of a small child was found close to a yacht club by a member of the public. It was discovered at the Burnham on Sea Yacht club, a mere 500 yards from where Dylan was last seen. The child's family are now aware of these deveopments but the body has not been formally identified yet.
His close family have stayed in the area since the tragic accident last weekend. They have thanked all who helped with the search and rescue operation but obviously need time to grieve.
