Yesterday a man wearing an Afghan army uniform shot dead the British soldier. The incident which took place late Monday is now under investigation. The man's family have been informed but he will not be named nor further details given until after a period of grace.
The man who was killed belonged to an engineering regiment that was working in the Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand province. He was attached to 28 Engineer Regiment, attached to 21 Engineer Regiment. Aljazeera reported,
"The British soldier was killed when a suspected Afghan soldier opened fire first at Afghan troops and then at British soldiers," said Major Martyn Crighton, an ISAF spokesman. "In the subsequent engagement, the attacker was killed by British troops."
It has been reported that the gunman shot at Afghan troops and British soldiers. Claims by the Taliban that the gunman was working for the Afghan authorities have been strongly denied by the government.
The dead soldier is the first fatality for the British army in Afghanistan in 2013. You can see all the other British Fatalites, since 2001, here.
No doubt he willnot be the last.
