The sad news yesterday, July 17, 2012, has left many people in the UK wondering why an elderly couple buried in a car where not discovered sooner. Rosemary Snell and an as yet unnamed man had enjoyed an evening out. The meal they had shared was cut short due to bad weather. The couple decided to skip coffee in order to make their way home before the weather worsened.
It could be that their decision cost them their lives.
They drove home and travelled throuigh the Beaminster Tunnel. Sadly for the elderly couple a terrific mud and landslide swept through the tunnel burying the vehicle. The car was in fact flattened so that there was no hint that a car was crushed beneath the sea of mud. The height of the fall was only perhaps waist high when workers finally were able to begin work on clearing the mess.
The grim discovery of Ms Snell and her companion has raised many questions, not least why it has taken 10 days for their bodies to be found?
The couple were reported missing on July 7th, 2012, but only found yesterday. One assumes that death was instantaneous but we do not really know, do we? The tunnel partially collapsed and the authorities have said that it took time to ensure that the area was safe for work to begin.
Whilst for the sake of the couple's family we do not want to dwell on what the pair may have suffered. it is true that death may have not come quickly. 67-year-old Miss Snell and her friend, a former hospital consultant named locally as Mike, were already trapped when emergency services closed the tunnel, following the landslide.
Heat seeking equipment was used at the time of the fall which indicates that the couple were already dead. No sign of life was detected. A local police Assistant Chief Constable maintains also that due to the weight of the fall death must have been almost instantaneous.
Either way there are lessons to be learned. The lack of speed of reconstruction portrays perfectly the dire state of the UKs infrastructure and its dwindling workforce.
The excuse from police that it was "a busy weekend" is just not good enough.
