Have I Got News for You is a topical funny quiz show. It has had regular team hosts Ian Hislop and Paul Merton holding audiences for quite some time now. Ever since the days when Angus Deayton was elbowed after saucy shenanigans the host each week has varied.
There has been quite a selection of weird and wacky hosts down the years. Current London Mayor Boris Johnson became a popular politician and presenter after appearing on HIGNFY some years ago. It could be fair to say the he owes his mayoral role to the show.
A couple of weeks ago it was Star Trek's cult actor William Shatner in the host's chair.
The show may be topical but it is essentially a comedy show. It pokes fun at panel members, politicians and others in the news. The show often gets away with bad language and racy humour but poor old Shatner was not quite so lucky.
In almost a throwaway laughter inducing comment Shatner said, "that the coastal town of Ilfracombe is 'laced with prostitution'" The audience in the studio laughed. The viewers at home laughed. The panel members laughed. However the people of Ilfracombe did not.
Today June 20, 2012, there is news that Shatner has said sorry to Ilfracombe. What only in the UK nonsense yet again. As the mailonline has reported, "Shatner singled out the Devon town as a 'haven' for sex workers to howls of laughter from panellists and the studio audience."
Well you would laugh. Those with an ounce of sense could tell it was just a joke. Presumably HIGNFY is shown around the world though and the people of Ilfracombe were not happy. After the show the town's Mayor wrote to Mr Shatner's agent. He invited William to visit Ilfracombe and see for himself just what a lovely place it was.
Perhaps for the Mayor it was just a publicity stunt. After all this publicity comes in the middle of a wet summer season for the resort.
Attempting a merry quip himself the mayor, Mr Crabb said: 'As Captain James T Kirk, Mr Shatner has been to places where no man has gone before, however, the episode of HIGNFY clearly shows he has never been to Ilfracombe."
